Why can bagasse be used to produce molded pulp tableware?

Oct 29 2022

After the bagasse is processed into pulp in factories, it can be used to produce tableware.

The structure of bagasse is complex, but its main components are cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Among them, hemicellulose is about 20.6% and lignin is 18.6%. The content of cellulose in bagasse is about 35.4%, which is composed of β-1, 4-glycosidic bonds linked to glucopyranoside, which is a two-phase coexistence system (the coexistence of crystalline region and amorphous region). The crystalline region contains hydroxyl groups that easily form hydrogen bonds with surface water molecules, and the crystalline portion of cellulose is difficult to decompose. Hemicellulose is chemically similar to cellulose. It is a heterogeneous polysaccharide with different hexyl and pentose groups linked by β-1 4 oxygen bridges. The degree of polymerization is relatively small. It contains about 70% cellulose and 30% polyarabinose.

The main component of paper is plant fiber. Bagasse is rich in hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin, etc., which is an excellent raw material for papermaking. The energy consumption of pulp is too large and the cost of pulping is high, so try to eliminate lignin. Lignin is an important component of bagasse, with a molecular weight of 10,000-50,000 accounting for about 95%. The lignin in bagasse is mainly distributed in the epidermal tissue, and it combines with hemicellulose to form a firm protective layer, which hinders the contact of microorganisms or enzymes with cellulose, making it difficult to hydrolyze bagasse.

How to produce bagasse pulp molded tableware

Bagasse tableware is made of bagasse into sugarcane pulp and then mass-produced by chemical and mechanical methods, while pulp molded tableware usually uses finished bagasse pulp board as raw material, and cannot directly use bagasse.

Advantages of bagasse pulp molded tableware:

● Sugarcane is a renewable straw fiber, which is widely sourced and inexpensive and does not use wood.

● No wastewater is produced in the production process, and there is no external discharge. Eco-friendly containers from nature

●  The product is waterproof and oil-proof

● During use, it can be frozen, frozen, microwaved, and baked at 220 degrees

●  The product can be completely degraded in 45-90 days in its natural state and can be composted at home. After degradation, the main component is organic matter, which will not produce any garbage residue and pollution.

●  As a packaging container, it has the characteristics of buffering, compression resistance, shock resistance, etc., and can effectively protect the packaged products.

●  packaging electronic products will not generate static electricity

GREENOLIVE uses advanced scientific formulas and cutting-edge automation equipment and technology and is made from natural plant fiber pulp such as bagasse and bamboo pulp, tree-free, carbon-neutral, eco-friendly, compostable, and biodegradable bagasse tableware. In the scenario of climate change and plastic pollution, considering the global plastic restriction, it is a new type of environmentally friendly product with great potential.
